BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

A NEW SEASON. A NEW MARKET.

In 2006, the Boston Public Market looks forward to another great season of marketing and selling fresh local products. We will reopen the award-winning "BEST OF THE NEW" (The Boston Globe) Old Northern Avenue Bridge Market, starting June 15th, every Thursday. Also, we are opening a NEW market on June 14th at Dewey Square, right across from South Station, every Wednesday. Both markets go to early November with hours from 11:30-7:00 P.M.

THE GREATER BOSTON FOOD BANK PARTNERS WITH BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET

The Greater Boston Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England, and one of the largest food banks in the country. They distribute over 24 million pounds of food annually to hundreds of local agencies including local food pantries, soup kitchens, day-care centers, youth programs, senior centers, and homeless and residential shelters.

We will be donating our surplus food at the end of day, from both of our markets, to help the hungry people of Eastern Massachusetts, of which there are nearly 517,000.

MOVING FORWARD: HEALTHY FOOD, HEALTHY CITY

Recently, BPM staff attended Mayor Menino's "Food for the Hub" conference to discuss how to bring more healthy food options into our homes, our schools and our restaurants and supermarkets. We look forward to working with the City as they examine the establishment of a "Food Policy Council" for Boston.

We have also submitted two proposals to the US Department of Agriculture. First, a farmer-to-institution direct marketing program for the Longwood Medical Area, to build partnerships between local producers and medical institutions. Second, an outreach program to bring healthy food, health screening and culinary demonstrations to the housing developments of South Boston.
