BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET NEWSLETTER

On November 8th the Boston Public Market on Dewey Square wrapped up a successful first season. People who work, live and visit the South Station area got a glimpse of what the Rose Kennedy Greenway can be when fully activated – an urban oasis highlighted with local products from all different types of New England vendors. Thank you to all the customers, vendors and partners of this market for helping us make the 2006 market a great success!

HEALTHY EATING: COUNT THE CUPS
The redesigned U.S. Food Pyramid and the latest dietary guidelines make it easier to eat your produce—measured in cups rather than servings. Individualized advice varies according to age and activity. For example: a 40-year old woman who exercises less than 30 minutes a day should eat 2 ½ cups of vegetables and 1 ½ cups of fruit daily, more if she is active. A 65-year old man, at same exercise level should eat 2 ½ cups vegetables and 2 cups of fruit—and for all ages “more is better” is the new motto. Strive to fit more produce into your daily diet and include a fruit and/or vegetable in every eating occasion.

FALL/WINTER FRUITS AND VEGGIES
Good-bye to the sweet corn, zucchini and yellow squash of summer and hello to winter squash, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and kale. Swing into apples, pears and cranberries and wait for other berries until next summer. When buying local produce at the market, you are assured of the freshest and most nutritious fruits and vegetables, which are excellent sources of beta-carotene, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

DEWEY SQUARE MARKET BRINGS LIFE TO THE GREENWAY

Proponents of a year-round indoor market for Boston have been heartened by the popularity of the new Dewey Square outdoor market across from South Station this summer and fall. The planning and operation of this market are the work of the non-profit Boston Public Market Association in cooperation with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, City of Boston and Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

A year-round market would provide a new outlet for local farm goods and help preserve farmland by encouraging local growers to increase productivity. Specialty food producers and local artisans will also be involved and the market will create a dynamic environment for other economic and cultural activities.

In addition to fresh seasonal produce, the product mix will include local seafood, baked goods, local cheeses, meats and poultry products, wines, prepared foods and horticultural products.

So where do we go from here?
Our Chairman, Greg Bialecki, recently wrote the Turnpike, thanking them for their support and proposing that we return with a “bigger and better” market in 2007. It is our hope to secure approval as soon as possible so that we may recruit new vendors, and develop creative programming, from chef’s demonstrations to lunchtime activity.

How can you help?
Tell us what you’d like to see at the 2007 Market, sign up for our mailing list if you have not already, and if you would like to see a permanent year-round market hall in the City, make a tax-deductible donation to the Boston Public Market Association. DONATE ONLINE OR SEND A CHECK PAYABLE to Boston Public Market Association, 40 Court Street, #1150, Boston, MA 02108.
