BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET
    ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

    Volume I, January 2006

We've had a great year in 2005, opening
our first Summer Market on the Old Northern
Avenue Bridge, looking at options for new
projects across the city, and, of course,
surveying sites for a permanent Boston
Public Market, which would offer a variety
of fresh, locally-produced foods. Read on
and learn what we've been up to, where
we're going and how you can be involved!

    BIGGER AND BETTER IN 2006!
In 2006, we have many projects
pending — a bigger and better
    Summer Market; exploration of
    satellite sites such as the
    Longwood Medical Area; a
    potential farmer to institution
    direct marketing program;
    development of new
    partnerships with Boston
    neighborhood groups and city
    government and, hopefully,
    location of a permanent site
    for a year-round Boston
    Public Market.

We hope you'll join us this
    year — at the Summer
Market; at one of our special
events, or as a volunteer or
    contributor to our work. For
    more information, please

    Look forward to seeing you
    in 2006!

    PUBLIC MARKET BRINGS NEW LIFE
    TO OLD NORTHERN AVE BRIDGE

On July 7, the Boston Public Market Association (BPMA) opened its first Summer Market on the Old Northern Avenue Bridge, the pedestrian only walkway to the emerging South Boston Waterfront area. The amazed smiles of shoppers finding a wide range of produce, meats, baked goods, and even ice cream on the formerly barren Bridge made our effort to find this site well worthwhile.

Throughout the summer, BPMA Market Manager Sarah Kline and over a dozen vendors supplied area workers and visitors with a fresh and fun new food alternative. Mayor Tom Menino stopped by to cut the ribbon for the site and was joined by many local community leaders at a reception held at the Daily Catch in the J. Joseph Moakley Courthouse. Throughout the summer, the Boston Public Market brought new life to the area and provided a shining example of how this public resource could be put to use — for the public!

    CHEF'S HARVEST DINNERS RAISE $60K
As the Boston Public Market wound up its season, we held our Second Annual Chefs’ Harvest Dinners to raise funds for the Market’s continuing activities. This year, over twenty restaurants donated a table to help BPMA. Participants at Boston’s finest restaurants were served a specially prepared dinner by many of Boston's best chefs.

Thanks to a combination of corporate and individual sponsors ranging from $200 to $10,000, BPMA raised about $60,000, a 32 percent increase from the previous year's event. Ten percent of proceeds will go to America’s Second Harvest for Hurricane Katrina-related relief. Many thanks to our chefs, our sponsors and our volunteers for a great event!
